(6/20/07) Lost HEMA Theory Summary It's been more than four months since HEMA Theory was first introduced, on February 8th, 2007 (see the "Home: HEMA Theory" page on this web site.) Since that time, the theory has been expanded and revised over the course of 22 commentaries on this web site. I realize that the sheer number and length of these commentaries may be daunting, especially for first-time site visitors. So now is a good time to take a step back and summarize the main points contained in the current Lost HEMA Theory.... The Primary Focus- Lost HEMA Theory focuses mainly on the power of the island to manifest thoughts and emotions in tangible form, through electromagnetic energy. The HEMA acronym reflects this emphasis and it derives from the DHARMA acronym, specifically the "H" and the "MA". "H" refers to Heuristics, or the power of FOCUSED ATTENTION: "A heuristic is a replicable method or approach for directing one's attention in learning, discovery, or problem-solving. It is originally derived from the Greek "heurisko" (εὑρίσκω), which means 'I find'. " (Source= http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heuristic). The "MA" refers to Material Applications. The "E" stands for Energy. Simply put, HEMA Theory focuses on Heuristics (focused attention such as thoughts and emotions) channeled through the island's unique Energy field to produce tangible results in the world, or Material Applications. H-->E-->MA. The "Home: HEMA Theory" page, and other pages on this site, delve further into how this connects to the DHARMA agenda and the attempt to change values in the Valenzetti Equation. The Nature of the Island- HEMA Theory has always acknowledged the central role of the island as a source of unique energy enabling the manifestation of thoughts and emotions in tangible, perceptible ways. Indeed a warning regarding the potential dark side of this power was acknowledged in the latter part of the "Home: HEMA Theory" page (posted to the web on 2/8/07), citing the example of the Krell in the movie "Forbidden Planet." The initial HEMA Theory statement (2/8/07) points to the magnetite-infused black rock as a source of the electromagnetic energy and develops a literal connection to the visit by Magnus Hanso and the Black Rock crew, and a figurative and potentially functional connection to the Tycho Magnetic Anomaly in the feature film "2001: A Space Odyssey." Later commentaries on this site have expanded and revised this view. For example, the "DHARMA & GAIA" and "Ben Sybil GAIA" commentaries broach the possibility that the island's black rock magnetite deposits and electromagnetic energy field may in fact comprise a neural network serving as the brain of GAIA, mother Earth, governing and course-correcting dynamic systems on a planetary scale. This view was further expanded in the 6/11/07 "Lost Predictions" commentary, to acknowledge the symbiotic relationship among the island and the Others, who benefit from the myriad powers of the island, including (1) manifesting thoughts and emotions, (2) healing wounds, and (3) life-extension (ala Richard Alpert). Of course, we've known about the first two powers for quite some time, and these were explicitly acknowledged in the initial HEMA Theory statement of 2/8/07 ("Home: HEMA Theory".) The benefit of this symbiotic relationship for the island is protection from intrusive technology and actions which negatively impact the island's electromagnetic consciousness and powers. Extraction of magnetitic black rock from the island, through mining by Magnus Hanso's crew, harmed the island by excising parts of its 'brain' or neural network. DHARMA's presence and activities on the island had similar deleterious effects through placing 'neural implants' on the island (hatches and other facilities), which further disrupted the island's neural network. No wonder Jacob does not like technology.... it disrupts the island's power/consciousness and threatens its very survival.... The island is more than a physical configuration of magnetic deposits, producing a weird, unique electromagnetic field; the island is self-aware and conscious as a result of the unique field which comprises its neural network. Whether or not an asteroid, a meteor, or some other form of extraterrestrial matter may have played a role in the formation of the island's magnetic deposits, energy field, and resulting consciousness is a question that remains to be answered. The Island's History- My commentaries are in agreement with statements by Rich Pundit and others, identifying the important roles played by prior persons/groups, throughout the history of the island, including: * Atlanteans * Egyptians (Osiris, Isis, Horus) * Magnus Hanso and the crew of the Black Rock * Soviets investigating psychic phenomena (see "Soviet/DHARMA Psi Wars") * DHARMA * Etc. Per my "Lost Predictions" commentary, I expect we will eventually see the use of a new narrative structure on Lost, a 'Deep Flashback' approach focusing on disclosures regarding the island's past, earlier than the DHARMA arrival (Magnus Hanso, Egyptians, Atlanteans, etc.) A Psychic 'Battery'- The island's power to HEMAtically translate thoughts/emotions into material applications is especially beneficial for psychics. In my "Quantum Connections" page I discuss how Rose is able to know that Bernard is o.k., prior to their reunion, with reference to actual, hard science. On this and other pages-- "HEMA Carrie", "HEMA Science", "Psychic Kids", I provide readers with valuable information regarding the scientific underpinnings of psychic phenomena, an important class of effects on the island (involving Walt, Rose, etc.) The "Psychic Kids" page explores some intriguing future implications involving the island's electromagnetic field, Tesla devices, and psychics with genetically-engineered/enhanced abilities.... Space-Time Relations- By inserting the name "Minkowski" as the recipient of the call by Jack at the end of the season three finale, the Lost producers/writers have all but confirmed the prediction by J. Wood and others, that Lost involves some interesting space-time relations. Minkowski space is a fairly basic approach to relativistic space-time relations. It will be interesting to see the more specific take/perspective on these relations that the show's producers/writers have in mind, as the series progresses. A myriad of theories abound on the web, ranging from "time loops" to "pendulums" to "alternate universes" and beyond. Which specific space-time conception turns out to be true is a question that remains to be answered in future episodes (see Endnote #2). From a HEMA Theory perspective, the island's unique electromagnetic properties play an important role in enabling the interesting space-time relations we are seeing in operation on the island. My own speculations to date are contained in the pages "Lost Doppelganger" and "Karma Chameleons". 'Childish' Events on the Island- A recurrent theme in my commentaries is the observation that some of the apparently 'magical' occurrences on the island seem to be prompted or motivated by the sensibilities of a child. Perhaps the island's powers are being leveraged by a powerful child psychic, or channeled with reference to some imprinted patterns of child-like thoughts/emotions, onto the magnetic medium that is the island. 'Evil Aaron/Entity' theory is one attempt by me to address this, building on ideas expressed by Doc Jensen. A more recent theorist proposes that Jacob is this child (see Endnote #3). The Fate of The World- Is the island merely a physical and/or mechanistic entity, with weird and powerful properties that transform our thoughts/emotions into reality, allow us to heal faster, prolong our lives, and influence past/present/future events (fate) through accessing Minkowskian space-time? Or does the island play a more active role in affecting persons and events? Is the island conscious and self-aware? Does it seek to preserve its own 'life' through hiding its location from outsiders, hoping to avoid the threat of disrupted or even destroyed consciousness through human actions and technologies? Is the island a neural network, the functional equivalent of the brain of GAIA, attempting to course-correct fate in order to insure its continued existence qua planet Earth? |
