THE INCIDENT:

PLAYING THE EVOLUTIONARY GAME OF LIFE,

TOWARD A CHILDHOOD'S END,

ACHIEVING AN OMEGA POINT REALITY

Congratulations to the entire cast, crew, and creative team for delivering that rare roller-coaster ride season finale that lives up to and actually exceeds expectations.... Kudos all around.... I can't wait to see what they have in store for us in Season 6....

Jacob's Technicolor Spacetime Tapestry:  Dreamweaving The Fateful Plot Threads Of Our Lives-

Yes, indeed, how satisfying it was to witness Jacob/Fate symbolically spinning at a veritable 'wheel of fortune/ fate/life' in his lair beneath the statue, spinning the superstrung threads
running and reverberating through the tapestry weaving together the lives of the characters we have come to know and love so well on the show....

If the opening scenes for each new season of Lost provide important thematic clues regarding the contents and plot progressions to be woven throughout the new season, surely the opening scenes of the Season 5 Finale have signaled and presaged key aspects of the nature, substance and direction for Season 6....

While Ilana's cryptic exchange regarding Lapidus' 'candidacy' confirms the looming importance of factional frictions in Season 6 and mirrors deep structural aspects in the plotting of Chris Carter's Millennium, the opening scenes in The Incident, Part 1 confirm the prediction-- cast in different guises by many observers-- of a larger, broader superordinate frame of reference within which the unfolding story is currently being woven....

Yes, as per the lostisagame site and other excellent prognosticators proposing and exploring the gaming angle on Lost, we have finally come to a point at which Darlton and crew are willing to 'show their hand' in terms of the higher-order beings 'playing dice with the fate of the species'.  Of course, one way in which the 'game' that has been playing out for the past five seasons was 'winked at' or signaled during the first season was through the black and white, good and evil, symbolic representations found in the game of beach-blanket-backgammon....  And Walt's proficiency at this game-- appearing as pure luck, but we know otherwise-- further signals some crucial plot themes and twists to be unpacked by the Lost Creative Combine (LCC) in Season 6.  (More on this, below...)

But the true power of the opening scene in last night's phenomenal finale lies in its strong and undeniable signaling that the two parties engaged in playing 'the game' with us humans-- Jacob and his dark counterpart, on the beach discussing the fate of the Black Rock and her crew-- embody a superior form of being to us, at least in terms of their distinctly non-trivial abilities in exercising fate-ful control over relationships among matter, energy, space, and time on the island....

Hmmm.... Two superior beings, playing a game with our species to see if we are ready, able, and willing to transcend our savage, carnal, and animalistic roots.... to evolve beyond our current state of matter-proximal, corporeally-contained existence.... to begin to move up that veritable Sephirothic Tree of Life, climbing the Jacob's Ladder up from the amino-acidic pea soup of matter-constrained life, up toward an existence as pure energy sentience, ultimately merging with the Unity/ONEness that is....  (More on this, below....)

Yes, the overarching plot/picture now emerging over the course of the past five seasons is that one important function of the island is to provide a testing ground for the species, with Jacob and his dark counterpart wagering over our readiness and ability to refrain from, transcend, and evolve out of our 'dark side' tendencies, including the fighting, lying, cheating, stealing, etc....

From the Black Rock to the Oceanic Flight 815-- and who knows how many other rounds in an ongoing, millennia-spanning game-- Jacob and his dark counterpart have been leveraging the island as a staging ground for using representative cross-sections, drawn from our species throughout history, to test our readiness for taking the next step in the evolution of our species beyond our dark-side-animalistic tendencies, up from our carnal, savage, matter-bound existence, up the Sephirothic Tree of Life....

Yes, Jacob is wagering that we can do it... And his brief, episodic insertions into the mainland pre-island lives of Flight 815 passengers are, in no small ways, one means of trying to gain an edge in the game he is playing with his dark counterpart, an attempt to plant a seed and 'prime the pump', to tip the scales in his favor when the next batch of 'test subjects' finally crash/land on the island, and the next round of wagering, experimentation, and testing begins....

And if the Flight 815 passengers end up fighting with themselves and the Others, end up lying, cheating, stealing (etc.) just like the crew of the Black Rock did, and just like all of the other cross-sectional groups that Jacob has brought to the island throughout the millennia to date.... in Season 6 will we witness yet another group brought to the island.... Is Kate's New Kids On The Block lunchbox signaling a Season 6 shift to a new cast of characters landing on the island, playing the 'same old same old' game...?  And will this new set of characters arrive on a plane downed by the profound energy burst emanating from the Swan hatch site energy shaft, projecting upward through space?  Is the island really obliterated?  (More on this, below....)

Is this all there is to it?  Is Lost simply depicting-- in an admittedly entertaining and engaging manner-- a pair of superior beings spending what to us may appear as an eonic eternity on an islandgamingboard, engaged in a leisurely wager over the fate of an inferior, less-evolved, lower species.... Homo sapiens?  While the gaming angle helps explain an important part of the dynamic undergirding the entire series, of course there is more to Lost than a game....

Don't forget Jacob's remark to his dark counterpart (Lucifer?) regarding the ongoing cycle of karmic testing and retesting of our species; in particular, recall the comment about making 'progress' despite recurring failures by previous groups in transcending the dark, animalistic side of our nature, holding us back from evolving beyond matter-constrained beings, up the Jacob's Ladder to pure energy existence and to unity....  Yes, in addition to providing a key role as a testing ground for the species, the island is serving a second important HEURISTIC function as a setting for learning how to live and work with each other....

Mirroring Jacob's brief insertions into the pre-island lives of the Flight 815 passengers is the deeper agenda of bringing cross-sectional groups of Homo sapiens to the island not just to test for their readiness to transcend this Earthly, matter-bound plane of existence; no, in addition to this important goal, the deeper agenda also includes an attempt by superior beings to effect lasting changes in the fateful course of the species, through implanting knowledge and experiences helping us to learn to live and work together in a more positive manner, an existential, evolutional 'pay-it-forward' scheme of inserting positive 'memes' into the minds of the island test groups, then subsequently 'seeding' them back into the mainlands of their everyday lives....

Jacob is hoping this profoundly heuristic approach to helping the species evolve will pay it forward and ultimately pay it back as some future group succeeds in demonstrating that the species is ready to take that next step up the Jacob's Ladder through evolving beyond our matter-bound, animalistic 'envelopes'.  And don't forget that Jacob implied making PROGRESS through recurrent game play cycles in testing cross-sectional groups, up to a point at which there is an END.  Now while some might understandably construe this as presaging a game-cycle-ending death of Jacob and a plutonium-enabled death of the island proper, there is another equally possible meaning in his intriguing yet ambiguous exchange among Jacob and his dark counterpart 'Lucifer' as the Black Rock sailed toward the island....  What Jacob may be signaling in his cryptic comments is an end to our species as we know it, as we grasp the next rung up on the Jacob's Ladder of Sephirothic matter-energy-existence relations.....

So yes, as you can see from the above remarks, I do believe we've witnessed a key disclosure by the LCC that two superior beings are playing a game with our species, testing our readiness to evolve up the Jacob's Ladder toward existence on a pure energy plane, ultimately merging with the Overmind/Unity/ONEness/Omega Point....  Moreover, while it appears these two beings are superior to us in form-- by virtue of their more highly evolved matter-energy-space-time manipulation abilities-- despite their existence on a higher plane (higher rung on Jacob's Ladder), they are still connected to the material world, as hybrid matter-energy beings.... Meaning, of course, that as we saw in the Jacob's Lair beneath the Four-Toed-Statue, they are still fallible/mortal in some physical/material ways.... 1

Further insight into the matter-energy nature of these beings may be found in Jacob's dark, Luciferian counterpart having to go through so much to get there, to the point at which he was able to manifest/instantiate himself in the form of a risen Locke, using this as a ruse to gain entry to Jacob's Lair and an audience with his avowed rival... remember the discussion of finding a loophole, and when 'Lucifer' told Jacob he wanted to kill him, while the Black Rock was sailing to the island....

The 'Lucifer' (dark side) character is wagering against Jacob that our species will not be able to turn from the dark side roots of our savage, animalistic, carnal, selfish nature... And since 'Lucifer' had to go through so much to find and exploit the loophole to get back to Jacob ('Lucifer' in the guise of Locke) and have him/Jacob killed (by Ben), there do appear to be some limits on 'Lucifer's' matter-energy-space-time abilities, as well as Jacob's.... In short, despite being superior beings, Jacob and 'Lucifer' do not appear to have fully climbed the Jacob's Ladder to existence on a pure energy level, and they certainly have not showed us signs that they can exercise 'magical' matter-energy-space-time powers OFF-ISLAND....

So for now, at least, it appears that the two 'superior being' players in the island game of testing our species-- Jacob and 'Lucifer'-- are not supreme, omnipotent beings but instead are simply resting on a higher rung on the Jacob's Ladder of Sephirothic matter-energy-mind evolution....  This is entirely in sync with my feeling that the LCC has been sprinkling intriguing clues here and there throughout the season regarding the importance of ANGELS, fallen and otherwise.  While some might construe Jacob as Christ and his dark counterpart as Satan, battling for lives, souls, and the very fate of our species, a more likely scenario is that Jacob is GABRIEL or some other 'good' angel, while his dark counterpart is LUCIFER, fallen angel....

Yes, links to CONSTANTINE, THE PROPHECY, and other related expositions on these themes are indeed relevant....  How interesting that they invariably involve a testing of our 'fallen, sinful, lost' species, through a provision of choices mirroring that which Jacob gave to Ben.... Yes, that scene did mirror one of the final scenes in the movie Constantine, with Gabriel/Tilda Swinton holding the Armsel Striker-like Holy Cross Shotgun up to her chest, giving John Constantine the option of killing her... which he refuses, demonstrating hope for our species....  And like Lost, Constantine also includes superior beings who partake in and observe the ongoing 'game' of our testing as a lost, fallen species, all while ironically coveting our 'favored place' in the eyes of God, despite our lowly powers/abilities.  These themes will figure more largely in Season 6 if, as I strongly suspect, the LCC taps into and riffs on one of the greatest masterworks of science fiction to date (more on this, below....)

Season 6, What Lies Behind Door #1: The New Kids On The Block-

Given the myriad disclosures provided to us in the Season 5 Finale, if the LCC does follow through on leveraging the New Kids On The Block (NKOTB) lunchbox clue, then we may indeed see a new cast of characters on the show next season, playing yet another round in that eons-running existential game show hosted by Jacob and Lucifer.... SPINNING WHEEL OF SPACETIME FORTUNE:  ARE WE THERE YET?  Yes, are we there yet, as a species....?  Are we ready to transcend our dark side tendencies, moving up the Jacob's Ladder to a new plane of existence?

If the LCC pursues what lies behind Door #1, there will be a great gnashing of teeth and wailing among the masses of Lost aficionados, as our beloved Flight 815 passengers and even nasty ol' Ben will be sorely missed.... And what about the even more profound cast change in the form of a shift from the ISLAND to another 'gaming venue/site'?  What if the island, along with the cast of human characters, were really and truly obliterated as a result of Juliet's earnest bomb-bludgeoning efforts, yielding a megatonic, Faraday-Parable-Enacting, BIG ROCK IN A POND RIPPLING spacetime tapestry reweaving and loopholing event...!

One means of recuperating the Lost template even in the event of a cast- and venue-obliterating plotline is to take a deep breath and recall that the island is NOT the only energy node on the planet.  Yes, even if the NKOTB option behind Door #1 is pursued by the LCC, they most certainly can relocate 'the magic' of the matter-energy-space-time relations to another node on the Earth's energy grid, a.k.a. the 'Vile Vortices'....

So in the most extreme form of a 'cast and venue house-cleaning' type of game resetting approach, the LCC could introduce us to a new cross-sectional group of humans selected by Jacob (or some other 'good-side' superior being/angel) to arrive at a node on the energy grid (perhaps even the ULURU/AYERS ROCK site), where these Lost NKOTB would be tested in yet another round of the ongoing, millennium-spanning game of evaluating the readiness of our species to climb the next higher rung on the Jacobian evolutionary ladder, moving up on the matter-energy-mind plane, heading toward pure energy consciousness, moving ever so closer to merging with the Unity/ONEness/God of Bohmian Implicate Order....

A less extreme form of NKOTB might occur if the LCC selectively 'cleans the character house' by pulling in a fresh cross-sectional representation of the species for testing, while keeping Jacob, Lucifer, Alpert, Eloise, Ilana, and the rest of Ilana's Millennium-Group-inspired-band intact, with Lapidus in tow as a 'candidate' for membership in the latter....  On some key levels, this would make eminent sense, as in the game of Lost the test subjects come and go, like new pieces on the chess board, but the broader set of players and judges helping to insure the integrity of the playing field, adherence to rules, etc., remain the same....

An even less extreme NKOTB scenario for Season 6 would involve a more  selective cleaning of the character house as identified in the preceding paragraph, with the new group of test subjects/game pieces brought not to some other node on the Earth's energy grid, but instead brought to... the ISLAND....

Under what circumstances might this be possible...  What conditions might enable the island to 'survive' the Swan hatch not-so-incidental thermonuclear blast?  Here it is profitable to recall the distinct and profound powers resulting from the island's unique energy profile/properties....  Strong electromagnetic fields can be used as means of CONTAINING HIGH ENERGY PLASMA AND NUCLEAR REACTIONS....

So while on the surface it may appear to some that the island has with all certainty been obliterated-- wiped in its arc-tracing existence from the face of the planet-- on further inspection, the strength and nature of the threatening Swan hatch energy 'hot' pocket in fact provides the very means of ensuring the island's survival, even in the face of a white-hot nuclear blast....  In short, given the demonstrated use of electromagnetic fields in the containment of nuclear reactors and plasma devices, it is not at all outside the realm of possibility that the undeniably huge energy unleashed by the DHARMA drilling crew channeled the nuclear blast up the drilling shaft, upward through the atmosphere like a beacon of charged-energy-particles, signaling.... yes, you know where this is headed... and it DOES link to Jacob's cryptic, dying(?) remark... "THEY'RE COMING...!"

Indeed, we may have already witnessed a smaller-scale precursor to this type of Incident/event in the blinding energy surge shooting up the Orchid hatch well, engulfing Locke and stopping the 'record skipping' spacetime effects.  My strong suspicion is that the latter event is analogous to the spacetime rippling effects resulting from a small rock thrown into a pond, while the effects of the Swan hatch Incident will, as predicted in Faraday's deleted-scene parable, be analogous to throwing a big rock in the pond....

Accordingly, it is no surprise at all that we should expect some sort of game-changing effect resulting from the Incident.  And, of course, we'll have to play our own game of 'wait and see' until the LCC reveals which path/plotline it has chosen to pursue in Season 6.  But for those of you diehard island fans who do not want to see that tropical game-ful venue go away... take heart, as the science of using electromagnetic fields to contain nuclear reactions and the precedent of the smaller-scale Orchid hatch well-shooting-energy-event provide two bases for resting one's hope that the island may not be obliterated, after all....

But oh my, oh my, what a powerful blast that would be, channeled as it was, up the cannon-barrel-like drilling shaft....  Once the game-changing big-rock-in-the-pond effects rippled throughout the fabric of curved spacetime, I wonder just what that blast might cause to fall from the sky...   And just who that blast might be signaling to come to this planet, ala Jacob's 'dying gasp' warning... "They're coming....!"

Season 6, What Lies Behind Door #2:  Let's Make Our Stand In L.A.-

A second game-changing option the LCC may pursue in Season 6 is the interesting proposition that Jack may actually have succeeded in his role as Trashcan Man-- with a strong assist from Juliet, of course-- by blasting through the past, effectively erasing their island-related past experiences and landing them back on the Oceanic Flight 815 plane hurtling toward L.A.  In my 5/7/09 "Follow The Leader" posting, I explore the distinctly dire consequences that might result from such a success, riffing on Stephen King's masterpiece The Stand as a source of potential plotlines if the LCC decide to opt for Door #2....

The short form of this approach to Season 6 has Jack et al. heading into LAX on Flight 815 in 2004, with all island-memories erased.... Same characters, different game... this time it's played out on the mainland.  Of course, Jacob, Lucifer, Alpert, Eloise, Ilana, etc. are there, only now they are operating in Southern California.

And the dire plot twist is straight out of the real-life Dugway Sheep Incident that helped inspire The Stand:  What if Jack's success in erasing their shared island past has actually unleashed a far worse fate for humanity in the form of a devastating plague or cataclysmic shift in the Earth's magnetic poles.... What if.... we subsequently learn that the Flight 815 crash on the island actually was the preferred fatepath to avert a disaster as predicted by the DHARMA Initiative through use of the Valenzetti Equation?  And now Jack has made things far worse by erasing that solution and thereby plunging the world back onto a decidedly dire fateline....

If the LCC were to steer things in this direction, look for the return of our beloved cast of characters facing the challenges of: (1) getting to know each other anew, starting from a clean slate; (2) collectively realizing that the fleeting flashes of island-based (but now-mostly-erased) memories, periodically piercing through to their conscious awareness, are correctly telling them they need to 'unerase' these memories, restoring the more preferred fateline solution of Flight 815 crashing on the island, saving billions of lives and souls in the process.  If the island is indeed obliterated, look for them to leverage the power of the Uluru/Ayers Rock site, or some other node on the Earth's energy grid, to help 'unerase' the past and restore the Flight 815 crash.... Please see my 5/7/09 posting for more details on this 'Door #2' option for Season 6....

Season 6, What Lies Behind Door #3:  An Evolving Species, Our Childhood's End-

After viewing last night's episode, what plotline do I think the LCC will pursue in Season 6?  Here I would again draw upon the crucial opening scenes for the Season 5 Finale....  Yes, there were some very strong signals being sent in those scenes-- and throughout the entire two-part finale-- that the species is being tested for its fitness in evolving to a higher rung on the Jacob's Ladder of matter-energy-space-time relations, i.e., we are being 'auditioned' for our transcendental worthiness to make PROGRESS up the ladder toward an eventual pure energy state of being, culminating in a final mergence/merger with the Unity/ONEness of Bohmian Implicate Order.  Even the Flannery O'Connor book that Jacob was reading fits into this interpretation:

"Everything That Rises Must Converge is a collection of short stories written by Flannery O'Connor during her final illness. The title of the collection and of the short story is taken from a passage from the work of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin."

Yes, the Teilhard de Chardin concept of convergence to the Omega Point is strongly implied by the presence of the Flannery O'Connor book and other embedded clues in the finale:

"Teilhard studied what he called the rise of spirit, or evolution of consciousness, in the universe. He believed it to be observable and verifiable in a simple law he called the Law of Complexity/Consciousness. This law simply states that there is an inherent compulsion in matter to arrange itself in more complex groupings, exhibiting higher levels of consciousness. The more complex the matter, the more conscious it is...  The universe, he argued, strives towards higher consciousness, and does so by arranging itself into more complex structures.  Teilhard identified what he termed to be different stages in the rise of consciousness. These stages are analogous to what are termed the geosphere and the biosphere. The Law of Complexity/ Consciousness traces matter's path through these stages, as it 'complexifies' upon itself and rises in consciousness. Teilhard claimed that although it is not evident, consciousness (in an extremely limited degree) exists even in rocks, as the Law of Complexity/ Consciousness implies. In plants, matter is complex enough to exhibit a consciousness that is the very life of the plant. In animals, matter is complex enough to an extraordinary degree to where consciousness shows itself in a wide range of reactionary movement to the whole universe.  However, Teilhard here proposed another level of consciousness, to which human beings belong, because of their cognitive ability; i.e. their ability to 'think'. Human beings, Teilhard argued, represent the layer of consciousness which has "folded back in upon itself", and has become self-conscious. Julian Huxley, Teilhard's scientific colleague, described it like this: "evolution is nothing but matter become conscious of itself." So in addition to the geosphere and the biosphere, Teilhard posited another sphere, which is the realm of human beings, the realm of reflective thought: the noosphere.  In the noosphere Teilhard believed the same Law of Complexity/Consciousness to be at work, although not in a way previously seen. He argued that ever since human-beings first came into existence 200,000 years ago, the Law of Complexity/ Conscious began to run on a different (higher) plane. Consciousness in the universe, he argued, now continues to rise in the complex arrangement and unification (Teilhard sometimes called it 'totalization') of mankind on earth. As human beings converge around the earth, he reasoned, unifying themselves in ever more complex forms of arrangement, consciousness will rise. Finally, the keystone to his phenomenology is that because Teilhard could not explain why the universe would move in the direction of more complex arrangements and higher consciousness, he postulated that there must exist ahead of the moving universe, and pulling it along, a higher pole of supreme consciousness, which he called Omega Point."  [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_Teilhard_de_Chardin]

Hmmmm.... How interesting that per my 4/23/09 "Faraday's Variable" posting, work by David Bohm has established a physical science basis for Omega Point convergence which, in Bohm's terminology, is called the Implicate Order.  And how does this all fit with the presence of superior beings like Jacob, influencing and observing the testing of our species' readiness to move up the Sephirothic Tree of Life, up the Jacob's Ladder of matter-energy-space-time relations, toward achieving Omega Point existence, freed from the constraints of space and time, as a truly nonlocal, atemporal being....?

While all of the key pieces of the puzzle are now in place, to paraphrase Jacob's response to Jack when the vending machine was reluctant to give up the Apollo bar, we need a bit of a 'push' to help pop out the remaining parts of the pattern and complete the Season 6 puzzle....  And here we must turn to that 1953 sci fi classic by Arthur C. Clarke, Childhood's End.... 3

"Childhood's End is a science fiction novel by Sir Arthur C. Clarke, dealing with the role of Mind in the cosmos and the plausible implications of that role for the evolution of the human race. It was originally published in 1953 but first appeared as a 1950 short story titled "Guardian Angel" in Famous Fantastic Mysteries magazine.... Childhood's End explores humanity's transformation and integration with an interstellar "hive mind" or Overmind. It also touches upon such matters as cruelty to animals, man's inability to live in a utopian society, and the apocalyptic concept of The Last Man on Earth. The 1953 edition of the story begins at the height of the Cold War, a few decades after the fall of the Third Reich, with attempts by both the United States and the Soviet Union to launch nuclear rockets into space for military purposes, threatening imminent doom for the planet."  [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Childhood's_End]

Clarke's masterwork bridges to Lost in many key ways, ranging from last night's tantalizing hints at a Season 6 species evolution plotline to the prior themes of cruelty, difficulties in living together, and the threat of planetary cataclysm (DHARMA, Valenzetti....)  But the real value this work brings to the table lies in its insights into the nature and roles of: (1) superior beings overseeing the evolution; and (2) children displaying psychic abilities, paving an evolutionary pathway up the 'Jacob's Ladder'.  How ironic that Clarke's vision underscores the importance of Children in establishing and ensuring the evolutionary maturation of our species, a.k.a. the titular Childhood's End....

Clarke's work sheds additional light on beings like Jacob and 'Lucifer', superior in status to humans and displaying a strong interest in the progress, prospects, and evolution of our species.  Indeed, in Season 6 we may learn that like the Overlord Karellen in Childhood's End, Jacob's true purpose in Lost may be to help the species evolve above and beyond even himself, toward an 'Omega Point-like' existence:

"Karellen then reveals the true purpose of why the Overlords came to Earth. They are in service to the Overmind, a cosmic mind amalgamated from ancient galactic civilizations, freed from the limitations of ordinary matter. The Overlords are not themselves capable of joining the Overmind, but the Overmind has charged them with the duty of fostering humanity's transition to a higher plane of existence and merger with the Overmind.... Karellen expresses an envy of humanity; his race is trapped as they are, as they are not now capable of joining the Overmind, though he hopes they will eventually learn how to do so."  [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Childhood's_End]

In addition to shedding further insight into Jacob's role on Earth, this may help us to understand why Jacob-as-Overlord may not actually be a fully transcendent, omnipotent entity merged with the Overmind/Omega Point, serving instead as an intermediary, an observer, an advisor.... is Alpert an Overlord, too?

Clarke's novel raises the intriguing issue of what the Overlords actually look like and how startling this 'reveal' is to humanity:

"They resemble the traditional human folklore image of demons: bipeds with large wings, horned heads, and tails. The Overlords are taller than humans and of proportionally more massive bodies covered with a hard, black armor shell. The Overlords' resemblance to the devil of human folklore is explained as a form of racial memory and it is assumed (and not contradicted by the Overlords) that they had visited the Earth many thousands of years previously. The presumed failure of the experiment at that time led to the memory."

Although this is likely outside the realm of Lost plotline probability, per my Brotherhood of the Snake postings this year, it would certainly be an entertaining and intriguing twist to see Jacob's and/or Alpert's true appearance revealed as demonic...

Despite the interesting similarities that may be playing out between Jacob and the Overlords, I must admit that the most fascinating connections between Clarke's book and Lost reside in the prominent role that psychic children play in the evolution of the species:

"The Overlords begin to pay a discreet interest in the human experience of the occult and psychic research. It is assumed by humans that this is part of their anthropological study of mankind. Rupert Boyce has the best collection of books on the subject in the world and when the Overlords ask to borrow them he refuses, but allows an Overlord called Rashaverak to visit him and study the books. He uses the visit to impress friends and has a party during the Overlords stay. At the party a Ouija board session is conducted, watched by Rashaverak. The answers to questions given by the board are all explicable from knowledge in the minds of the participants except when a young engineer called Jan Rodricks asks the identity of the Overlord's home planet. The boards spells out the number from a star catalog — NGS 549672. One of the participants faints and there is a commotion during which the transcription of this part of the seance disappears. It is revealed that the Overlords suspect this occurrence is the first sign of what it to come.  Although humanity and the Overlords have developed peaceful and even friendly relations by now, the spread of equal goods and the ban on building space ships capable of traveling past the Earth's moon causes some sects to believe their innovation and independence is being suppressed and that culture is becoming stagnant. In response, those sects establish "New Athens", an island colony. Some ten years after the Overlords revealed themselves to humanity, human children begin displaying telepathic and telekinetic abilities and as a result, become estranged from their parents.... The racial memory of the devil in human folklore is now revealed not as a memory of past events but as a prescient "memory" of the Overlords' role in the extinction of Homo sapiens that results from the children's evolution. Karellen expresses an envy of humanity; his race is trapped as they are, as they are not now capable of joining the Overmind, though he hopes they will eventually learn how to do so..... Karellen announces that the children with psychic powers will be segregated from the rest of humanity on a continent of their own, and only these children will merge with the Overmind. No more children are born; the narration subtly hints that most of the parents commit suicide, while their children evolve towards merging with the Overmind. New Athens is destroyed by its leaders, by the detonation of a nuclear bomb."  [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Childhood's_End]

So is this signaling a Season 6 plotline focused on the LOST CHILDREN?  Yes, I most definitely believe this will be the case....  Now the pieces are starting to come together more completely....  From Bea Klugh's fervent interest in the lineage and DNA of Walt.... to Claire's visit with the psychic prior to the Oceanic 815 flight....  As Clarke's vision so masterfully underscores, the fate of the species in evolving to a higher plane of existence will critically depend on the children....

And at the close of Childhood's End, we learn that:

"The last man alive is Jan Rodricks, a physicist, who will witness mankind's final evolutionary transformation..... When Rodricks returns from the Overlord home world, he expects no one on Earth will remember him, nevertheless, he is unprepared for the return: mankind, as he knew it, has died.  About three hundred million naked young beings, physically human but otherwise with nothing in common to Man, remain on the quarantined continent. They are the final, physical form of human evolution before merging with the Overmind. Life on their continent — not only human life, but all other forms also — has been exterminated by them. No normal children have been born and all adults have met their end through despair. The vast cities that Jan remembers are all dark.  Some Overlords remain on Earth, studying the evolved children. It also is revealed here that the Overlords have met and conditioned other races for the Overmind, and that humanity is the fifth race whose apotheosis they have witnessed.  When the evolved children have grown strong enough to mentally alter the Moon's rotation and affect other planetary adjustments, it becomes too dangerous to remain and the Overlords prepare to leave. They offer Rodricks the opportunity of leaving with them, but he chooses to remain as witness to Earth's dissolution. Mankind's offspring have evolved to a higher existence, requiring neither a body nor a place, so ends mankind's childhood.... Rodericks reports, via radio, a great burning column of energy/matter ascending from Earth bearing indescribable colours and patterns. As he watches the Earth's gravity begins to decrease, the atmosphere starts escaping to space and material objects seem to dissolve around him. He reports no fear but a sense of accomplishment and completion and then a blinding flash of light as the Earth evaporates.."  [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Childhood's_End]

In Season 6 will we learn that Walt, Aaron, Ji Yeon, and Charlie Hume will play no small role in mirroring the mind-evolutionary transition depicted in Childhood's End, a fitting title for the season as this generation of psi-enabled 'New Evolutionaries' help our species climb the next rung up Jacob's Ladder, scaling the Sephirothic Tree of Life, heading upward toward a final, fateful, mergence with the Overmind/Omega Point/Unity of Implicate Order?  Is this the one, true DESTINY FOUND for our species?

If so, this would REALLY put the Heuristic in the HEMA Theory.... as pure Mind/Heuristics would now indeed truly Matter, leveraging Energy to achieve profoundly 'magical' Material Applications such as those which Clarke envisioned above...  If seeing 'Locke' reappear in risen, resurrected form succeeded in 'scaring the Hell' out of BEN, imagine how dry his pants would be were he to see Aaron and psi-crew literally moving the Moon or enacting some other cosmic act....  And yes it would be literally and figuratively mind-blowing to see them banding their powers together to deflect the path of an incoming asteroid, helping to avert a global catastrophe in the process....

Hmmm...  and what of Jacob's 'dying breath' utterance... "They're coming"...!  Is Jacob-cum-Overlord alerting us to the impending end of humanity as we know it and the arrival of the New Psionic Evolutionaries? 4 Or is Jacob warning us that some 'Overmindlike they' will be coming to Earth in response to a signal issuing forth from the island, as the Swan hatch 'incidental' nuclear blast shoots skyward through the atmosphere into space, focused like a beacon in the night, announcing a game-changing shift in the species, to a new plane of existence....

....and yes, this 'Door #3' alternative may turn out to be the real "New Kids On The (Evolutionary) Block" Season 6 plotline, foreshadowed by the lunchbox....

Time will tell....

ENDNOTES:

1.  Yet another piece has fallen into place through the revelation that it is NOT Taweret that is the Four-Toed Statue, but instead it is SOBEK, a male crocodile-headed fertility-related Egyptian god....

"Sobek (also called Sebek, Sochet, Sobk, Sobki, Soknopais, and in Greek, Suchos) was the deification of crocodiles, as crocodiles were deeply feared in the nation so dependent on the Nile River. Egyptians who worked or travelled on the Nile hoped that if they prayed to Sobek, the crocodile god, he would protect them from being attacked by crocodiles. The god Sobek, which was depicted as a crocodile or a man with the head of a crocodile was a powerful and frightening deity; in some Egyptian creation myths, it was Sobek who first came out of the waters of chaos to create the world.  As a creator god, he was occasionally linked with the sun god Ra.... Sobek's ambiguous nature led some Egyptians to believe that he was a repairer of evil that had been done, rather than a force for good in itself, for example, going to Duat to restore damage done to the dead as a result of their form of death. He was also said to call on suitable gods and goddesses required for protecting people in situation, effectively having a more distant role, nudging things along, rather than taking an active part. In this way, he was seen as a more primal god, eventually becoming regarded as an avatar of the primal god Amun, who at that time was considered the chief god. When his identity finally merged, Amun had become merged himself with Ra to become Amun-Ra, so Sobek, as an avatar of Amun-Ra, was known as Sobek-Ra."   [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sobek]

As you can see, SOBEK's nature in 'nudging things along' fits closely with JACOB's brief episodic interjections into the pre-island mainland lives of key Flight 815 passengers, including the remark he made as he handed the extra Apollo bar to Jack, noting that he had to give the machine a 'push'....  More importantly, however, you've noted the key role of Sobek as creator.... linking to the island as Garden of Eden and more.  And the role of restoring damage done to the dead intriguingly links to Locke.... These connections will be richly mined and explored by Lost aficionados in the months to come....

3.  While Clarke's work is certainly seminal in many ways, we would be remiss if we did not mention the foundational contributions of one Olaf Stapledon:

"Stapledon's writings directly influenced Arthur C. Clarke, Brian Aldiss, Stanislaw Lem, C. S. Lewis and John Maynard Smith and indirectly influenced many others, contributing many ideas to the world of science fiction. The "supermind" composed of many individual consciousnesses forms a recurring theme in his work. Star Maker contains the first known description of what are now called Dyson spheres. Freeman Dyson credits the novel with giving him the idea. Last and First Men features early descriptions of genetic engineering and terraforming."  [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olaf_Stapledon]

Undeniably direct in its relevance to Childhood's End and Lost is Stapledon's classic 1930 masterpiece of science fiction, Last and First Men: A Story of the Near and Far Future:

"A work of unprecedented scale in the genre, it describes the history of humanity from the present onwards across two billion years and eighteen distinct human species, of which our own is the first and most primitive. Stapledon's conception of history is based on the Hegelian Dialectic, following a repetitive cycle with many varied civilizations rising from and descending back into savagery over millions of years, but it is also one of progress, as the later civilizations rise to far greater heights than the first. The book anticipates genetic engineering, and the idea of superminds composed of many telepathically-linked individuals."

No doubt the last sentence caught your attention.... Stapledon's other notable work of relevance to Lost is Star Maker (1937):

"Star Maker is a cornerstone work of science fiction. Stapledon undertakes the immense task of describing the entire history of life in the universe. It dwarfs in scale even his 1930 book Last and First Men, which is a history of the human species over two billion years. It tackles philosophical themes such as the essence of life, of birth, decay and death, and the relationship between creation and creator.... A key idea is the formation of collective minds from many telepathically linked individuals, on the level of planets, galaxies, and eventually the cosmos itself.  The climax of the book is the "supreme moment of the cosmos", when the cosmical mind (which includes the narrator) attains momentary contact with the "Star Maker" of the title. The Star Maker is the creator of the universe, but stands in the same relation to it as an artist to his work, and calmly assesses its quality without any feeling for the suffering of its inhabitants."

Yes, as in Childhood's End and in Lost, telepathy plays a role in helping the species evolve toward a higher plane of existence.  Is Stapledon's 'Star Maker' a 'modern' equivalent to the ancient Egyptian god SOBEK....?

4.  Of course, no mention of a new form of people living on an island would be complete without a brief nod to that televisionary Lost precursor The New People:

"The New People was a very very short lived ABC television series which aired from September 22, 1969 to January 12, 1970 and almost nobody remembers. The New People was an Aaron Spelling production about a band of young college students who, on their way home from a goodwill tour to South East Asia, crashed on a deserted South Pacific island named Bomao. The island had previously been used by the Atomic Energy Commission as a bomb test site, and so was complete with buildings, cars, provisions, and test-dummy mannequins." [http://www.snowcrest.net/fox/TNP/]
