Piecing Together The Paranormal Puzzle
The “Hostiles Sayid Enter 77” page on this web site leverages the “Ice Station Zebra” clue to explore implications for understanding past, present, and future happenings on the island. Of particular interest and relevance is the race between the Soviets and the Americans, especially from the early 1970s onward, to develop a new class of parapsychological techniques for intelligence and military applications, including remote viewing. Stargate, DIA, INSCOM, SRI, CIA: Beyond Alphabet Soup-
“Stargate” is more than part of the title for a movie and a television series franchise. According to Wikipedia: "The Stargate Project was one of a number of code names used to cover "remote viewing programs". Others included Sun Streak, Grill Flame, Center Lane by DIA and INSCOM, and SCANATE by CIA, from the 1970s, through to 1995. It was an offshoot of research done at Stanford Research Institute (SRI). The research program was launched partly because some intelligence officers believed a 'psi-gap' had emerged between America and the Soviet Union, for example the abilities of Nina Kulagina. Remote viewing attempts to sense places or events are normally performed in the present, but sessions have also been undertaken to sense the past and future." Moreover, in the “Enter 77” episode, we learned that Mikhael was in the Soviet military, and served in Afghanistan. And we saw Bea Klugh speaking Russian to Mikhael. Who else on the island will be revealed to have prior intelligence/military backgrounds?
In short, given the documented history of the psi gap between the Soviets and the U.S., and the heightened activity in the early 1970s, especially by the U.S., to explore and leverage parapsychology as a means for gathering intelligence (remote viewing, and beyond), it would surely not be outside the range of reason to consider that the timing of DHARMA’s arrival on the island may indeed be no coincidence. Were the Soviets already stationed on the island, conducting parapsychological experiments to leverage the island’s unique electromagnetic field as a psychic battery, using powerful psychics to study the effects of this combination on remote viewing, precognition, retrocognition, telekinesis, and more....? And was the DHARMA Initiative, per the Ice Station Zebra suggestion, a ‘front’ for the U.S. and other nations to close the psi gap, with the Soviets?
Swann Hatch Song: Don't Be Puthoff-
How interesting, indeed, that the person who coined the phrase ‘remote viewing' was a gentleman named Ingo SWANN, the very name adorning the hatch in close proximity to the island's strong, unique electromagnetic field. Swann invented the phrase, 'remote viewing': “as a derivation of protocols originally developed by René Warcollier, a French chemical engineer in the early 20th century, documented in the book Mind to Mind. Ingo Swann “is an artist who helped develop the process of remote viewing at the Stanford Research Institute sponsored by the Central Intelligence Agency, and has become well known as a remote viewer himself." Dr. Harold Puthoff is another key player in the remote viewing story: "Swann is commonly credited with proposing the idea of Coordinate Remote Viewing, a process in which viewers would view a location given nothing but its geographical coordinates, which was developed and tested by Hal Puthoff and Russell Targ with CIA funding."

Puthoff is well known within gravitational physics for his papers on polarizable vacuum (PV) and stochastic electrodynamics topics, which are examples of alternative approaches to general relativity and quantum mechanics. In the '70s and '80s he directed a CIA/DIA-funded program at SRI International to investigate paranomal abilities, collaborating with Russell Targ in a study of the alleged psychic abilities of Uri Geller, Ingo Swann, Pat Price, Joseph McMoneagle and others. Puthoff has invented and worked with tunable lasers and electron beam devices, concerning which he holds patents, and is co-author (with R. Pantell) of 'Fundamentals of Quantum Electronics' (Wiley, 1969), published in English, French and Russian.... Hmmm.... gravitational physics, stochastic electrodynamics, general relativity, quantum mechanics, tunable lasers, electron beam devices.... Did DHARMA include a Dr. Puthoff analog, on their roster of recruits, someone who helped them explore connections between gravity, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, electron beams, and more, all on an island marked by a unique electromagnetic field? And how might this bridge to studies involving human beings, with psychic powers? "In 1972, Dr. Harold E. Puthoff, then a researcher at SRI, put forth a series of proposals to study quantum mechanics in life processes. This resulted in the now controversial remote viewing CIA programs that have been reportedly discontinued and partially declassified since." The bottom line is that the more you study the history of Soviet research into parapsychology-- and the more you examine the response by U.S. intelligence and military entities to close the psi gap with the Soviets, in the early 1970s through the mid-1990s-- the more you can see the parallels to what has happened and is happening on the island. Russian-speaking islanders (Mikhael, Bea, and who else?) No problem, especially when you consider the parapsychological component of DHARMA’s Initiative....
Among other things, what remains to be revealed is the exact nature of the relationships among the Soviet-speaking islanders, DHARMA, and the U.S. intelligence and military entities.... Who got there first? Was DHARMA a ‘front’ for a U.S.-backed attempt to close the psi gap with the Soviets? Did DHARMA or the Soviets arrive on the island first? How does this help to explain the conflicts among the more long-term island inhabitants?
Are the “Others” really the good guys, striving to impede/stop the use of the island as a laboratory for exploring potential parapsychological intelligence and military applications, for strategic advantage? Or, are the "Others" part of the military/intelligence complex that is using the island as a laboratory? Recall what Ben told Sawyer as they gazed out across the ocean, toward the island which had now become Sawyer's home, the site of the Flight 815 crash.... Ben remarked that Sawyer's a good con artist, but the Others are much better. Surface appearances, and hidden agendas... Was DHARMA a 'front', a cover story for the deeper, darker agenda of a military/intelligence/industrial complex?
Voices In The Wilderness: Remote Viewing Stations (RVS's)- In addition to exploiting the island’s unique electromagnetic energy source, gene therapy may also have been explored as a means of leveraging and increasing psi powers. Per the notation on the Swan hatch blast door UV map, we know that gene therapy was used to adapt polar bears to the tropical climate. Gene therapy may also have been examined as a means of increasing physical prowess, as suggested by Ethan’s superhuman strength in the Claire/Charlie incident. Imagine a platoon of super-soldiers, not created through use of alien technology (ala X-Files), but instead equipped through gene therapy with enhanced physical strength and psi abilities, with psi abilities leveraged and augmented through the use of portable electromagnetic field generator devices, all of this applied to missions involving intelligence gathering, field combat, and/or other types of military objectives.... Bea Klugh's ability to speak Russian, her interest in Walt's psychic abilities and whether Michael really was his biological father, Danny Pickett drawing blood from Michael for testing... all of these begin to take on some intriguing additional meanings.... Perhaps the Others are the remaining vestiges of the Soviet project to investigate parapsychology as a means of gaining strategic intelligence, and a platform for a new family of weapons. If genetic testing can enable the Others to tell if Michael really is the father of Walt, they may have identified one or more genomes associated with heightened psi abilities (remote viewing, precognition, retrocognition, telekinesis, etc.) And if DHARMA was able to genetically engineer/acclimate polar bears to a tropical climate, what's to stop them from exploring alternative uses of gene therapy? Knowledge of psi genomes may have enabled the Soviets and/or DHARMA to design and implement a gene therapy program aimed at instilling and amplifying psi abilities, for the purpose of gaining strategic advantage through enhanced intelligence (remote viewing) and developing military applications (precognition, retrocognition, telekinesis, teleportation, etc.) Hmmm.... The last two letters of DHARMA begin to take on some interesting shadings... Material Applications... Applications for Material advantage, in military/strategic matters, etc.... This may help to explain the seemingly 'magical' instances in which Flight 815 passengers have felt as though they were being watched, and heard whisperings in the background (la Jetee homage?) The proximity and quality of these whisperings suggests either the intentional placement of a darn good speaker system on the island, or some other sort of explanation.... Perhaps the Soviets and/or DHARMA succeeded in establishing remote viewing stations, which are now still being used to 'observe' the Flight 815 passengers.... Are the whispering voices projected psychically, to these passengers, as a by-product of them being watched by Others, remotely? |
